Teacher education requires both high-touch and high-tech to be effective. Educators across the country recognize that preparing teachers is a complex task. Colleges and universities are providing more hybrid and on-line classes in teacher education, while at the same time maintaining personal contact with pre-service teachers through advising and professional education courses.
Many teachers of methods and content courses are employing online course management systems containing links to learning objects which can enhance teacher preparation and provide strong elements of both content and pedagogy. MERLOT is an excellent resource for these learning objects. Additionally, assignments created by MERLOT members provide ways in which MERLOT resources can be used in the classroom. (Examples of Learning Exercises can be found here.) Editorial board members have made extensive use of Personal Collections. Not only do they help organize our favorite sites, but we can copy each other's collections and set up Personal Collections for each of our classes.
Within MERLOT's Teacher Education collection are resources both teacher educators and in-service teachers can use in their classrooms. Because of the enormous range of disciplines that are involved in teacher education, you may find it helpful to look under both content and methods for materials to augment your teaching.
